Clinker Lounge - Space for Musical Creativity

Since the middle of the year 2018, the excellent acoustics of the Clinker Lounge boast an array of chamber music from a variety of ensembles. Clinker Lounge Concerts, alongside the established Literaturstation series at the Clinker Lounge, host chamber concerts from different ensembles and in different constellations twice a month. The intimacy and closeness with which the music making can be experienced by the audience in this atmospheric hall, is a core value of the concert series and audience members may meet the artists both pre and post-concert in order to talk more closely about the music, performance design and, or other artistic themes.

Rothko String Quartet

Concerts are curated by Lea Schwamm and Judith de Haas. They both are musicians themselves and are simultaneously driven to initiate new cultural engagement.

Team

Lea Schwamm has been playing violin since the age of five, is currently studying at the University of the Arts under Prof. Nora Chastain and works as a freelance musician. In addition to her music studies, she is very interested in the development and orientation of classical music in our society today. In 2015 she founded the chamber orchestra ensemble reflektor with fellow musicians and has since become acquainted with the tasks of cultural management on the board of the orchestra. She considers the plan to make the Clinker Lounge a new concert venue in Prenzlauer Berg as a wonderful challenge and looks forward to the creative process that is to be set in motion.

Judith de Haas has a versatile background, as she has been splitting her time as a post-graduate professional musician with studying both interdisciplinary European Studies-graduate course, as well as a MA International Management, which she has focused on the cultural scene. Her experiences as an internationally performing solo, chamber music and orchestral violinist inspire her to think about the future of the cultural scene in Europe, for which she feels a certain responsibility of designing initiatives which could open new ways for the classical music scene to stay alive in the interest of today’s society, with a high-quality profile. Judith is a regularly guest player with the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra and forms a Duo with pianist Leonardo Reyna. After her experiences as an Ambassador for the European Union Youth Orchestra regarding the initiation of the Global Exchange Project, she now leads the management and communications of the Scharoun Ensemble Berlin.

History

The BACKFABRIK dates back to the end of the 19th century. It was on this site that the brothers Aschinger built the headquarters of their empire supplying pea soup and “Schrippen”. By the mid-1920s, 4.000 people were employed in the workshops and food production of the Backfabrik.

geschichte 1024

In 1947 began the VEB BAKO and the “Ostschrippe” eerea, from which the baking factory derives its name. Its huge baking machines Schrippen and bread for the whole of East Berlin. Since the reunification of east and west the venue hosted a colourful array of different ventures. In 1990/91 Horst Schießer - known by the acquisition of the "new home" - turned the baking factory into Cityback, which had to close its doors again in 1997. This time was followed by three exciting years of temporary use as an off-location. The "Casino" and the "Cookies" attracted many hundreds of people each week. Alternative workshops, a skating rink and much more found their temporary home here.

In February of the year 2000, when Hargen M. Bartels together with R.E.M.M. (Real Estate Merger & Management) acquired the site and engaged Architect team Bartels, Tritscher & Kocher with the transformation of the historic building of the wholesale bakery into a place for creative industry. Exactly two years later, in February 2002, Bundestag President Wolfgang Thierse opened the BACKFABRIK with a big celebration.

The BACKFABRIK is situated between Alexanderplatz and Kollwitzplatz, bordering Prenzlauer Berg and the historic center of Berlin - is a historic industrial building. Former wholesale bakery turned venue comprising 25,000 m2 combines quality of work with quality of life.
